Not about basketball

I am sure most basketball fans watched our game vs Polpak yesterday, and it was such an ugly game I figured I would not write about basketball this week.

I am still not sure how we won this game but I am just real happy that we did. On Thursday this week we will celebrate Thanksgiving in the United States. We have been celebrating this holiday for a long time, before we were even a country. Thanksgiving was started when the Pilgrims came over from Europe and settled in America. The Pilgrims then made peace with the Indians who were already living in America and they had a huge feast to give thanks. Thanksgiving is celebrated the fourth Thursday in November every year.

We always celebrate Thanksgiving the same in my family (even though I have not been home for this holiday in 10 years, because of basketball) my uncles, aunts, cousins and Grandparents all get together for a huge meal. I mean really a lot of food to eat. There is always turkey, mashed potatoes, corn, beans, stuffing, rolls, cranberry sauce and that is the main course. Some families do different things, but this is why my family does. Then for dessert there are many pies, cakes and ice cream.

Thanksgiving is very popular for a couple other reasons too. One, football is always played on Thanksgiving day. I am from Michigan and the Detroit Lions play every Thanksgiving and so do the Dallas Cowboys. There are two games and most families watch both games while eating the whole time. Thanksgiving starts a holiday weekend, which means everyone has four days off.

The day after Thanksgiving is the biggest shopping holiday of the year in the States. Every store is running deals and discounts on products. Most shops even open sometimes as early as 6 in the morning and stay open late until 10. It is really a crazy day and most of the time the traffic is incredible (imagine Wroclaw at 5 o'clock on Friday).

It is one holiday that is really fun and you have time to enjoy a little of everything but Thanksgiving is mostly for the family and to give thanks for all that you have been given. Hopefully that will educate you Polish people on one of our most popular holidays.

I hope to see everyone Saturday in Orbita as we play against Polonia. GO SLASK!!!
